Frequent Questions

Here’s a comprehensive FAQ that covers various aspects

Is your epoxy resin safe for use on surfaces that are in contact with food?

Yes, once fully cured, our epoxy resin is specially formulated to be safe for use on tables and surfaces that come into contact with food. You can trust our resin to provide a durable and food-safe finish for your kitchen countertops, cutting boards, and more.

How long does it take for the epoxy resin to cure?

Our non-toxic UV resin will soft gel in 3 hours at 20mils and be dry to the touch in 12 hours at 77°F.  The full cure time for our products is 7 days. Epoxy resin is temperature sensitive and will take longer to cure in cool temperatures.  The ideal curing temperature for our products is 70°-80°F (21°-27°C) maintained for the first 24 hours.

Can I use your epoxy resin on wood?

Yes, our epoxy is suitable for use on wood and many other surfaces. Its durable finish makes it perfect for sealing wood.

Is your epoxy resin easy to clean?

Absolutely! Our epoxy resin is easy to clean with and require very low-maintenance option for busy households. Simply wipe down your surfaces as needed to keep them looking their best.

Can I use your epoxy resin to repair cracks and chips in my countertops?

Yes, our epoxy resin is great for repairing minor cracks and chips in countertops and other surfaces. Just follow the instructions that come with the product for the best results.

Is epoxy suitable for both direct and indirect food contact?

The suitability varies by product and certification:

  • Products meeting FDA CFR 175.300 are generally suitable for more sustained food contact
  • Those with FDA CFR 175.105 certification are approved for indirect and incidental food contact only
  • Some products are certified for both direct and indirect food contact under different regulatory sections
  • Always check the specific manufacturer's guidelines for your product.

Is uncured epoxy resin safe around food?

No, uncured epoxy is not safe around food:

  • Keep food and beverages well away from resin and hardener in its pre-cured, liquid form
  • Epoxy resin is not edible or potable in either liquid or cured form
  • Only after complete curing does epoxy become food safe (if it's a certified food safe product).

Does adding colorants affect the food safety of epoxy?

Yes, additives can impact food safety:

  • Adding certain dyes or colorants can compromise a product's food safety designation.
  • For example, alcohol-based inks are flammable solvents that make the resin no longer considered non-toxic.
  • If using colorants, consider applying a final clear coat of food safe epoxy without additives.
  • Some manufacturers explicitly state that adding pigment causes the epoxy to lose its food-safe properties.

What are best practices for ensuring epoxy remains food safe?

Follow these guidelines to maintain food safety:

  • Measure and mix components precisely according to manufacturer instructions
  • Use a digital scale for accurate measurements rather than volumetric measuring to ensure complete polymerization
  • Allow for full curing before food contact
  • If using colorants, consider a final clear coat of food safe epoxy
  • Maintain appropriate temperature (typically 20-28°C) during application and curing
  • Avoid humid environments during application

Can food-grade epoxy be used for hot food or beverages?

There are temperature limitations to consider:

  • Most food safe epoxies have maximum temperature thresholds
  • Hot beverages like freshly brewed coffee are typically much hotter than these thresholds and can damage the resin
  • Some manufacturers specifically recommend not placing food or liquid with temperatures at or above 165°F onto epoxy resin surfaces

What certifications indicate epoxy resin is food safe?

United States Certifications:

  • FDA 21 CFR 175.300: Covers resinous and polymeric coatings intended for food contact surfaces
  • FDA CFR 175.105: A less stringent standard for epoxies used in food processing equipment in an indirect and incidental manner

European Union Certifications:

  • EU Regulation No. 10/2011: Governs materials intended to come into contact with food
  • Regulation (EC) No 1895/2005: Restricts the use of certain epoxy derivatives in materials and articles intended to come into contact with food
